Birthday Dram!
JBJ, aka James Pithie, Berry van Rijsewijk and Joren Nuyts, traveled around the Promised Land in November and returned home with no fewer than 9 distillery exclusive bottlings, which they presented in a great tasting on November 30. Unfortunately, I couldn't be there, but I was inundated with messages that evening highlighting one particular bottle. I soon realized that it was an agreed job and that the boys were teasing me a bit, but fortunately there were also a few good souls who made sure that I still got a sample. This is an Auchentoshan that matured for 12 years on virgin oak and is (was?) sold as a distillery cask at the distillery. I'm happy to taste it in honor of my birthday!
Intensely spicy and sweet nose of mocha, cloves, cinnamon and raisins, candied blood orange and pineapple on the BBQ. After a few minutes things soften towards apple strudel, rye bread and something like pencil shavings. Very pleasant.
Very strong attack on cloves, black pepper and some anise. Even some ginger gets involved. Once that spiciness is quenched a bit, a large fruit salad emerges. Apples, peach, apricot, blood orange and mandarin. And the whole thing is topped with a generous dose of maple syrup. A bit floral and nice and sweet.
This malt just keeps on giving, even in the long, spicy and dark sweet finish.
Young powerhouse of my beloved Lowlander. Thanks, Benny & Benny, this made my day! Happy Birthday to me! And even though the price is a bit on the high side, it is worth every penny! I'm honoured to have been there and to have been able to score the bottle.
