Our friends from Klubb23 were able to put their hands on an Auchentoshan! Well, I had to hustle, because the release isn't even 70 bottles strong and bottled for the Dram Brothers Whisky Society Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. That's a mouthful. Hopefully my favorite Lowlander is, too, in this case. Let's do this! Yes!
Welcome home, I'd say. On the nose, the DNA of my favorite Lowlander is unmistakable: citrus, grass, soft notes of the wood. A deeper analysis – ah, yes! – reveals a complex Toshan with lime, pink grapefruit (deliciously bitter!), freshly cut grass, a fresh bouquet of flowers from the field, the skin (crust?) of a pineapple, Granny Smith apples, almond shavings and quince. In the background, she even flirts with salt. Yes, she. Auchentoshan is a lady.
Great mouthfeel – oily and silky soft – but immediately spicy on white pepper and candied ginger and – now very clearly – a salty edge. Then both white fruit – apples, pears – as well as citrus – lime and grapefruit – and mirabelles follow each other at an express pace. The strength is almost perfect. water? Don't you dare! This lady doesn't need that at all.
And in the long, drying finish, this Toshan proves that she is not a lady, but a diva. excellent!
Ha, how wonderful to be able to taste such a great Auchentoshan. This is the kind of Toshan that makes me the Toshan man! And while I find 179 EUR for a 22-year-old Toshan far from cheap, I can't possibly let it pass me by. Excellent cask choice! These guys in Luxembourg are very fortunate.
