If you can help me expand my whisky palate, especially Auchentoshan, get in touch with me. Much obliged!
Auchentoshan
22 Year Old 1997 Distillery Exclusive Oloroso Cask #10488 No of bottles: undisclosed ABV : 57.1% Color : mahogany Tasted on 23/12/2020 |
Crème de Cassis
A few months ago my dear friends at the
Auchentoshan distillery smuggled out a sample of a soon to be
released expression. I did have to promise not to reveal anything
until the official release. Since that has now come to pass I was
finally able to try it – and order some bottles.
After you’ve read these tasting notes, you’ll understand why. Oh,
look at that color. Mouthwatering!
A little OMG moment comes over me from as soon as
I sniff this dram.
My olfactory sense is treated to deep, sweet sherry notes like raisins,
chocolate with crème de cassis, orange marmalade, glühwein and old
leather.
Also some old, dusty books. Cold coffee.
Gooseberries and wild flowers in the back, as
well as some cloves and cinnamon.
Hint of cuberdons. Nuts kick in and then some. This nose is succulent and
complex.
Yes!
It’s an absolute bomb on the palate! The typical Auchentoshan character
stays upright, but is wonderfully wrapped in cloves and cinnamon,
vanilla and cardamom while is also offers a truckload of dark honey,
maple syrup, grape juice and almond liqueur. A touch zesty and at
perfect strength.
The strength makes itself felt in the finish.
Nicely warm, spicy and dark and it will take you ages to stop
smacking your lips.
What a feast! Clearly a first fill oloroso cask, but Auchentoshan remains in the lead. Hurray, a stunner! Thanks, Neil, this type of release is why I am and will always be the Toshan Man!
