If you can help me expand my whisky palate, especially Auchentoshan, get in touch with me. Much obliged!
Auchentoshan
16 Year Old 1991
Milroy's of Soho, cask #485 Number of bottles: 2880 (of 5cl) ABV : 46% Color : sunlight Tasted on 10/10/2015 |
Body
No less than 2.880 bottles were filled from this sherry cask. Milroy’s of
Soho limited itself to bottling miniature. For those who are not
familiar with Milroy’s: it is one of London’s well-known whisky
shops, to be found in Greek Street in… Soho. Right. This miniature
could only be purchased at their shop (which my buddy Jan did for
me, thanks!). The Toshan was distilled on 20th February
1990 and bottled on 13th November 2007 at a drinking
strength of 46%.
The nose is grainy, fruity and rather light. I get grain, flowers, grass
and citrus, but also some bergamot oil, dried pineapple, white
chocolate and some green garden herbs. A fresh spring nose as is
often the case with Auchentoshan.
It has more body than expected. And it is quite tasty too. The light nose
did not announce that this Toshan would be so round and creamy. The
first sip offers loads of spices and a mix of lime and grapefruit.
Then some caramel and barley sugars kick in. The hint of pineapple
and chocolate from the nose do not return. I do get some oak and a
spicy prickle.
The short to medium long finish again offers some grain and citrus.
Nice surprise on the palate! At cask strength, this might have been a big one. Now it limits itself to being a wonderful aperitif. Fine by me.
