If you can help me expand my whisky palate, especially Auchentoshan, get in touch with me. Much obliged!
Auchentoshan
21 Year Old 1970 Number of bottles: undisclosed ABV : 43% Color : Oloroso Tasted on 16/04/2015 |
Dark Side
Knowing that there are no casks from 1970 left at the distillery, this is
probably the only way for me to enjoy an Auchentoshan from my year
of birth. So I am going to sit down and take my time for this one.
Look at how dark this is!
The nose is dark and honeysweet. All kinds of dried fruit: plums,
raisins, apricots. Then a good dollop of juicy honey and a hint of
espresso. Apparently quite a few sherry casks went into the mix for
this vintage. I get some vanilla and cinnamon. This is a very lovely
nose from Auchentoshan. Delicate, yet deep, if you catch my meaning.
I love it!
Good body. Nicely oily. Round and tasty. The sherry immediately puts its
foot down. This even reminds me a bit of Glenfarclas. Wonderfully
sweet fruit from the dark side (did you see what I did there, fellow
Star Wars fans?) with mild spices like cinnamon and soft pepper.
Succulent!
My only point of criticism is the fact that the finish is so darn short
I could not get it confirmed, but I could swear that this vintage 1970 consists solely (or mostly) of oloroso sherry cask matured Auchentoshan. Great Toshan that has become quite unaffordable. Thanks, Michael!
