If you can help me expand my whisky palate, especially Auchentoshan, get in touch with me. Much obliged!
Auchentoshan Heartwood Official Bottling, duty free Number of bottles: undisclosed ABV : 43% Color : Amber Tasted on 06/09/2012 |
Game Aperitif
The duty free range comprises five new
expressions of this Lowlander: Springwood, Cooper’s Reserve,
Silveroak, Solera and this Heartwood. Contrary to the Springwood
that is matured on bourbon casks, this Heartwood matured on heavily
charred bourbon casks and oloroso sherry casks and was bottled at a
slightly higher strength of 43% ABV.
On the nose I again get the typical lime
zestiness of Auchentoshan, but the Heartwood also offers oranges,
brown sugar, coconut and hazelnuts. A whiff of toffee and milk
chocolate.
It is slightly oily with oranges, berries,
roasted nuts and even some coffee on the palate. This is
surprisingly (well, maybe not) good for such a young whisky
(according to my inside source around 7 years of age).
The finish is short, but spicy and warm.
It is a lot more complex – although not complex as such – than the Springwood, but only a fraction more expensive. This is an aperitif for a meal of game.
